:: Diaspora Dinner XIII - The Jews of the British Commonwealth ::

Date: October 16th 2007

(Mailing List Information, including unsubscription instructions,
is located at the end of this message.)

Well all, the seasons have turned, a chill is in the air and the hills are turning green again from the rain - a new Diaspora Dinner is also upon us! Given the weather and our global palette, we will be focusing this dinner on the Jews of the British Commonwealth! :) I apologize for getting this out only now - I've been sick with some mutant uber-virus from Europe the last 3.5 weeks, and am only now getting over it.

If you are not familiar with the Commonwealth - you will be! :) Using the Commonwealth as a unifying theme, we can now present you with dishes from literally across the globe - our menu this time 'round will feature savoury dishes from the UK, Australia, Canada, South Africa and Nigeria - a unique combination of items that includes solid comfort food from the British Isles to some truly unique items that I am sure you will love (and only experience at a Diaspora Dinner!).

We will also have a great raffle this time 'round, with a total value of more than $400 - grand prize is a brand-new iPod Shuffle, in the just-announced Red colour - all proceeds from the sale of the (Red) Shuffle go to help fight AIDS. We have many other wonderful prizes, many straight from Britain - I think it is one of our best raffles ever!

As many of you have always told me, the Diaspora Dinner is unique and the quality of the food and presentation extend far beyond its admission price. We certainly have appreciated those kind words, and have kept our Diaspora Dinner prices frozen for the last 2 years. Starting with this one, however, we have raised the price a bit. For those of you who got your checks in early - congratulations, your initiative paid off, as we will honour your reservation at the original rate!

Why have we raised prices - well, two main reasons. One - inflation over 24 months made its presence felt. Two - we are no longer working the Shark Tank this year, due to it being to hard on our volunteers. As a result, Brotherhood is potentially facing a $4000 budget shortfall and we need to make this up so we can keep giving to Temple as generously as we want to.

As such, we have raised the price of the Diaspora Dinner's for non-Brotherhood members from $40 to $49 - the price for Brotherhood members remains the same at $40. If the men on this list go to the Diaspora Dinner's regularly, and aren't a member of Brotherhood - this is a great time to join, the cost will basically justify itself! :) The link to join is http://www.templesanjose.org/groups/brotherhood_membership.htm or just bring a check to the Dinner for $54. Don't forget that you get all the other benefits of being a Brotherhood member as well - free admission to our Distinguished Speaker Series, exclusive Brotherhood outings, etc. :)

For those of you who can't join Brotherhood - please remember we did manage to hold prices steady for 2 years and that all your $ go back to Temple. To maximize your $, we are also including a free raffle ticket in this and all future dinners - something we used to charge $5 for. We will also be making the raffles a really special event, and hope to see your continued support as we move forward with the Diaspora Dinners. :) We will also be keeping the $40 price available for students, so please email me separately if you want to take advantage of that for your kids (or yourself).

As always, RSVPs are a must for this event - please email your reservations to Dave Graubart at <email removed> - he is the master coordinator of the list. Also make sure to send your check for $49 per person ($40 for Brotherhood members and students) to Temple Emanu-El at 1010 University Avenue, San Jose, CA 95126, c/o Brotherhood. The check should be made out to Temple Emanu-El Brotherhood. Remember that your reservation is not secured until we receive your check! If you want to take advantage of our specially paired wines for each course, ably chosen by our resident Sommelier Cheriel Magat, please add an additional $18 to your reservation. There will be a single wine offered for all, so don't worry - alcohol is there if you want it. ;)

I thank all of you for your continued support and look forward to seeing you on November 10. :)

cheers, JH
