:: RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS AND UPDATES ::

Date: April 3rd 2008

Parents of all students in grades 2 through 7, B’nai Mitzvah Orientation is this Sunday in the Temple sanctuary from 9 am to 10 am.  This is a terrific opportunity to learn about the requirements for becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah as well as helpful information for parents when planning such an event.

Take a look at these three interesting events coming up shortly:

April 6th, 7:30 pm, Congregation Beth Am, Los Altos Hills

“Address Unknown”, an Israeli theatrical production with English surtitles.  This is the stage adaptation of a book that was written as a series of letters between a Jewish art dealer, living in San Francisco, and his business partner, who returned to Germany in 1932 and gradually adopted Nazi ideology.  This novel was credited with exposing, early on, the dangers of Nazism to the American public.  The play stars Zvi Schwartzberg and Rafi Kalmar.  This production would be of particular interest to our 7th through 12th graders.  Tickets are $50 (for front row seats; $15 of this is donated to the “Warm Home” project of Yad Be Yad), $35, and $20.  To purchase tickets, contact Vered Ravid at 408-530-8243 or Tziona Tassa at 650-965-3799.  You can also purchase tickets by Visa or Mastercard from Orly’s Bookstore at 408-732-3238.

April 13th, 7:30 – 9:00 pm, APJCC Family Campus in Los Gatos

How to Get Into and Pay for College is a program sponsored by the Silicon Valley Jewish community (including Temple Emanu-El).  All high school students and their parents are invited to attend to learn how to get into the right college for each individual student, how to pay for college, how to get financial aid, and how to find out about Jewish life on college campuses (you can speak with Hillel students).  Attendance is free.

April 14th, 4 pm, Board of Chambers of the Santa Clara County Supervisors

THREE UNTOLD STORIES FROM THE HOLOCAUST:  WOMEN, NORTH AFRICA and ASIA.  As a culmination of research and interviews, students from Palo Alto High School, St. Francis High School, San Jose State University and the County Youth Task Force will present this program.  The survivors they have interviewed will also provide personal testimony.  The program includes the unique opportunity to hear the music of Gideon Klein, a brilliant composer who tragically perished in Furstengube, performed by students from Santa Cruz.  The program is free and open to the public, and free parking is available in the County Employee Parking Lot at 70 W. Hedding St., in San Jose.  For more information contact JCRC Director Diane Fisher at 357-7504 or diane@jvalley.org

This Saturday, April 5th, you can enjoy Shabbat in Nature at Uvas Canyon Park in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains.  The Minyan Service begins at 10:30 am; the site is reserved from 8:00 am until sunset, so plan on spending as much of Shabbat at the park as you like.  For more information, contact Ginny Hoffman at 408-993-1139 or ginny032849@yahoo.com or Nancy Weintraub at 650-694-4604 or nancyweintraub@sbcglobal.net.

Miranda Katz is holding a bake sale this Sunday, April 6th, immediately following Religious School at 12:30 pm in front of the Temple House to raise money for her mitzvah project.  She is donating her proceeds to the Multiple Sclerosis National Society in memory of her aunt who passed away from this disease last December.  Miranda will become a Bat Mitzvah on May 3, 2008.

Thank you Bob Teeter!  Our temple community is so appreciative of all the long hours Bob has worked, either on his own or with other volunteers, to organize the library in the Religious School building.  The room is a lot less cluttered and it is now easier to look for and check out books.  Alas, we still need more volunteers and hours to finish up the job and keep the library running smoothly.  If you would like to pitch in, you contact Bob at rteeter@sonic.net.

Passover Candy orders have arrived.  The orders will be delivered to classrooms this Sunday, April 6th.  The Haggadot have not yet arrived; orders will be distributed as soon as they come in.

Need some help practicing the Four Questions before the first night of Pesach?  Go to this link on the Behrman House web site – http://www.behrmanhouse.com/family/welcome.shtml - where your whole family can practice reading and singing the Four Questions.  You can also use the website to gather information on Judaic subjects as well as practice Hebrew skills.

We are collecting Passover food items to donate to Project N.O.A.H. – No One Abandoned Here.  The major goal of this food drive is to collect and distribute packages of food to lower income and elderly Jews during Passover.  You can deposit any of the following wrapped Kosher for Passover items in the big blue bin outside of the Religious School office from now until April 18th.
