Social Action and Social Justice at Temple Emanu-El are now the key elements of the Tikkun Olam Committee. This committee works to address the charitable needs of the Temple and the community through Social Action, while addressing the root causes in our community through Social Justice that tend to disadvantage segments of our community and lead to the need for charity. Committee Meeting Revised

By now, I hope you have heard that the next committee meeting has been rescheduled to Tuesday, July 31, 2007 in the Temple's BFR at 7:00 pm. For any of you who haven't yet responded, please let me know you can and will attend. You may be interested in reading the several Tikkun Olam write-ups I have posted on the Temple's website. Tikkun Olam/Social Action Announcements

This month we will coordinate our Committee meeting with the Membership Committee meeting on Thursday, July 26, 2007. We will make a presentation to the Membership Committee about our Listening Campaign and discuss how we can get people interested in becoming volunteer listeners. Please plan on attending at 7:00 pm at the Temple. There is an opportunity to make a statement for Jewish values on July 5th. Two leading figures in the Holocaust Denial movement are scheduled to speak in San Jose this coming Thursday, July 5th at the Ramada Limited. These two people cover their vicious anti-semitism by arguing that the holocaust did not occur. I hope that some Jewish voices will appear at this conference to tell the truth. PACT will be having a legislative meeting with officials in Sacramento on Monday, July 9, 2007. They will be speaking with them specifically about healthcare in the crucial months leading up to policy change in September. Interested Temple members are encouraged to attend. I am starting a Tikkun Olam mailing list and will be contacting you all about our training for volunteer listeners the end of August or the beginning of September. Your name will be automatically included on the Tikkun Olam list, so you don't have to do anything.

Social Action Committee Meeting Reminder

I want to remind you that there will be a most important meeting of the SAC on this coming Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at 7:00 pm in the Temple House. Many of you on our mailing list are receiving these notices but have not yet attended our meetings. If there is only one time this year you will come to a meeting, please let it be now. Our meeting on the 19th will be to introduce the concepts of our Listening Campaign that I have been telling you about and to formulate our strategy and planning, now that we have joined PACT. This will be followed in August by several training sessions in active listening, conducted by the PACT staff. I would like to encourage all of you to attend this meeting, as it will serve as a kick-off for our efforts aimed at engaging our members in the Temples activities for Social Justice. You do not need to be an active member of the Social Action Committee, you only need to be committed to Social Justice and interested in making a difference in our community. You may chose to participate or just to be heard. I have recently posted a Tikkun Olam blog on the Temple website that I hope you will read. This will be only a short-term project, but one that I hope will stimulate members to consider a longer-term activism. The most important aspect of our efforts is to engage the congregation in a way that will reenergize our Temple. The payoff of the activities we want to support is a new connectedness among our fellow members and a stronger positive feeling for our Jewish traditions of Tikkun Olam. Again, interested people do not have to join or be a member of the Social Action Committee. Whether or not you participate, all of our volunteers will be trained in active listening, a skill that is most useful in our daily activities and interactions. Oops!! Regarding the previous message, June 12th turns out to be the Temple's Annual meeting, followed by a Board meeting, so that doesn't work for the SAC meeting. Let's try to meet on Tuesday, June 19, 2007, again at the Temple at 7:00 pm. Please let me know how this works for you. Everything from the previous message still holds, so please read it too. Social Action Committee Meeting

Things are moving forward on our project to join PACT, organize our volunteers, get trained and start our listening campaign. This is a very exciting time for our committee and for the Temple. Unfortunately, our May meeting, scheduled for next week, falls on Erev Shavuot, so I am going to have to cancel this meeting. I would like to schedule our next meeting for Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at the Temple at 7:00 pm. I hope everyone can attend. If this is not convenient, please let me know when you will be available next month ASAP, so I can get a consensus for a better time. Please talk up our project to other Temple members, so we can have a strong start. Our volunteers do not need to be members of the Social Action Committee; they only need to be committed to Tikkun Olam. Rich

Social Action News

Our Tikkun Olam presentation to the Temple's Board of Trustees was a grand success. The Board voted unanimously to approved our request to join PACT and begin our listening campaign to engage our members in social justice issues. I want to thank all of the SAC members who have supported our efforts and, in particular, Maggie, Barbara and Mike who participated so productively in the presentation. I have tentatively set Tuesday, May 22nd for our next meeting, at which time we will kick off our efforts to begin a new chapter in the history of Temple Emanu-El Social Action/Social Justice. Rich

Social Action Committee Reminder

Our Tikkun Olam presentation to the Board of Trustees is scheduled for this coming Tuesday, April 10, 2007. We will be meeting that evening at the Temple at 6:00 pm, for our regular SAC business meeting and to prepare for the presentation. Please let me know you will attend. This will be an important kick-off to what I believe will be a most exciting and productive year for us. It is vital that we show a strong presence at the meeting, so the Board will know that our plan for action has the commited support of our members. Rich

The next SAC meeting will be on Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at Temple Emanu-El in the Chapel at 7:00 pm. As always, this is an important time for us to put the final touches on our Tikkun Olam presentation to the April meeting of the Board of Trustees. Please let me know you will attend. Social Action Committee Plans

I have rescheduled our presentation to the Board of Trustees to the April meeting, which will be on April 10, 2007, because of the Passover holidays. In the meantime, we will have an excellent opportunity to start our efforts to engage the congregation by organizing our efforts to get the word out to the members and trustees about our project and how it will benefit the Temple. This month's Connections did not publish our notice of our project to match people up for a Sedar on the first night. Please let me know of anybody you think may be in need of a Sedar or who can host a Sedar. I will be scheduling a SAC meeting prior to the April 10th Trustee meeting. Our usual time would be Tuesday, March 20 but I want to make it as convenient as possible to as many of you as can make it. Please let me know your availability around this time. The Committee needs as many of you as possible to become more active. I realize that we all have many pressures on our time and there is a need to prioritize our availablitiy. I must appeal to your sense of urgency that we must do whatever we can NOW to improve our chances for a better future for our Temple. There is much to be done and if we can share the effort, it will be so much easier to accomplish. Please let me know you are willing to participate. Rich

Social Action Committee Meeting Cancellation

With the untimely death of our esteemed Temple president Bob Krandel, I have decided to cancel the next Social Action Committee meeting scheduled for this coming Tuesday, February 27th. Bob was a long time personal friend and a valuable supporter for all activities at the Temple. He will be sorely missed. I hope you will all join me at his memorial at the Temple on Monday, February 26th. Rich
