Testing only requires a cheek swab. Please take the time to read the attached email.  You, or someone you know, may be the match to save a life.  Thank you.   At this months meeting, Knitzvah member, Beverly Ferman, area manager for H & R Block, will briefly speak about tax tips that we might overlook when filing 2009 federal and state tax returns. For "Show and Tell," I will bring samples of the 236 fun fleece hats, 27 scarves and 90 beautiful quilts made for us this weekend at Sew For Love.  An army of Girl Scouts and community volunteers, including some of our own Knitzvah members, worked during three days to create warm and beautiful items that this year benefited Knitzvah and five other organizations.  We thank the Girl Scout Council of Northern California for their generosity.  In addition, we especially thank the incredible team of Michelle Zeiler and Jodi Wallace for organizing the 10th Annual Sew For Love. Here is a small world story about the appeal of Knitzvah.  While on vacation in December, I met a woman from Encino. She asked about my knitting and that led to a discussion about the Fabulous and Amazing Knitzvah members.  She also knits.  We exchanged addresses. She asked to be on our Knitzvah email list even though she lives in Southern California.  A week later, a box arrived from her with yarn, squares and fabric for us and a blanket for one of our shelter programs. She was so excited to hear about our group that she wanted to do something to help us.  The box was not all that she sent.  Last Saturday, at Sew For Love, someone told me that a volunteer from Sunnyvale was asking about a knitting group. We were introduced and she told me that her sister from Encino had forwarded the Knitzvah email to her about Sew For Love. Yes, it was my new friends sister.  She was not only a Girl Scout volunteer for the first time because of that email, she also wanted to know more about Knitzvah.  Our Knitvah circle is widening because of a chance discussion about a knitting project that occurred thousands of miles from home.  Fabulous and Amazing Knitzvah members and friends are a very special group indeed.  Magic happens when others hear about you and your incredible dedication and generosity!  We never know where our next conversation will lead us or what friends we will make because of it. She asked about my knitting and that led to a discussion about the Fabulous and Amazing Knitzvah members.  She also knits.  We exchanged addresses. She asked to be on our Knitzvah email list even though she lives in <st1:place>Southern California</st1:place>.  A week later, a box arrived from her with yarn, squares and fabric for us and a blanket for one of our shelter programs. She was so excited to hear about our group that she wanted to do something to help us.  <o:p></o:p> The box was not all that she sent.  Last Saturday, at Sew For Love, someone told me that a volunteer from <st1:City><st1:place>Sunnyvale</st1:place></st1:City> was asking about a knitting group. In the last 6 months, we delivered 1416 items all made with your loving hearts and speedy fingers!  Almost 800 of those were delivered between <st1:date Year="2009" Day="15" Month="11">Nov. 15, 2009</st1:date> and <st1:date Year="2010" Day="6" Month="1">Jan. 6, 2010</st1:date>!  Knitzvah members should be very excited about these accomplishments. Dear Mindy, Can you please convey our deepest gratitude to the Knitzvah committee for their contribution of so many wonderful knitted blankets, hats and booties to the Shalom Baby program. These amazing things, made with love are very much appreciated by the families that receive the Shalom Baby baskets after the birth of a new child. Thanks again for being such a crucial part of this happy outreach. JFS Embrace-a-Family Chanukah drive was a big success because of the support of our members and many others.  Thank you for your personal contributions and participation.  Eight hundred items and many gift cards were donated.  (This does not include Knitzvahs contributions.)  One hundred and fifty people benefited from the Chanukah "wishes" and over 500 food packages were delivered.  Gift cards help those with emergency needs throughout the year.  Michele Myron performed Chanukah miracles to make this outreach happen.  JFS does a spectacular job of meeting needs in our community on a daily basis.  Other news: Two new groups have come to my attention: 1.     My Puente <a href="http://www.mypuente.org" target="_blank">www.mypuente.org</a> helps farm and nursery workers and their families.  Jim Holley, Jewish Family Services Job Developer, aids this group and requests our help. They are in need of warm clothing, especially scarves.  We have quite a bit of wool yarn that cannot be used for Knitzvahs other projects.  Are there any volunteers available to help me make wool scarves?  I will bring supplies for this project to our meeting. 2.      Birthright is an agency which helps young and very low-income mothers and their infants.  Michele will have more information about them for us on Sunday. Since 1863, a total of 3446 recipients have been honored, of which 17 were Jewish. Mr. Kwart began his research after attending a meeting of the Jewish War Veterans in <st1:place>Southern California</st1:place>. In private life, Mr. Kwart was an aerospace engineer, after earning electrical engineering degrees at the <st1:place><st1:PlaceType>University</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName>Miami</st1:PlaceName></st1:place> on the GI Bill. After her talk she was selling two books that Sisterhood has purchased for the Temple Library (located in the Religious School). They are A signed copy of Day After Night Publisher's Weekly says: "in her compulsively readable latest, she sketches the intertwined fates of several young women refugees at Atlit, a British-run internment camp set up in Palestine after WWII. ... . The dynamic of suffering and renewed hope through friendship is the book's primary draw, but an eventual escape attempt adds a dash of suspense to the astutely imagined story of life at the camp: the wary relationship between the Palestinian Jews and the survivors, the intense flirtation between the young people that marks a return to life. Diamant opens a window into a time of sadness, confusion and optimism that has resonance for so much that's both triumphant and troubling in modern Jewish history." The second book is called Blessings for the JourneyA Jewish Healing Guide for Women with Cancer. In November 2004, a group of thirteen women gathered at Mayyim Hayyim; some were cancer survivors, others were caregivers and health care professionals. They had each wished for a specifically Jewish, spiritual guide to the difficult journey through treatment and its aftermath, and decided to join together and create one. For three years, they met to talk about their experiences, share information, and assemble resources. Blessings for the Journey is the result of their hard work and commitment. Chanukah Boutique Big Success I wanted to thank all those who helped make last Sundays Chanukah Boutique a big success. Thank you to all the volunteers, both members of sisterhood and non-members, who helped with kids crafts, jumper supervision, ticket and raffle sales, set-up, break down, etc. Thanks to the volunteers at the boutique Bernice Gaon, Deborah Zimmer, Harriet Reisner, Idelle Cagan, Bobi Levine, Ilene Levine, Janis Decker, Judee Weinstein, Julia Goldstein, Kelly Snider, Nancy Ganz Lindley, Natalie Mauskopf, Sandi Cohen and Sherri Wiesner. Thank you to the Gift Shop volunteersJudy, Kathy and Ivan Aronson, Bruce, Nathan and Peggy Frederick and Bunny Roth. Thank you to the Senior Youth Group who prepared and sold lunch. A special thanks to Beth Roelin, Deborah Zimmer and Lori Telson for help with publicity, to Cherie Ravel for obtaining a parking exclusion (which really helped with attendance) and to the custodians who did the set up and break down of the room. The gift shop sold over $1800 worth of merchandise The raffle collected $126. Congratulations to the ten winners. Kids Activities ticket sales raised $35 PLUS over 30 more kids participated at no charge because their parents spent at least $10 at the boutique. The Senior Youth Group sold everything they prepared. We collected over $200 in vendor contributions. We really appreciate your input. I'm Back! AND...it looks like I brought the cold weather with me and a small intestinal bug. But, I'm starting to feel better and am hopeful I'll be fine for the Sisterhood meeting tomorrow night so that I can thank everyone in person. And now, on with the report. Thursday afternoon was the our District Lunch. It was delicious and a lot of fun. Sandy Gatlin, our president, and another board member dressed up as Miss Piggy and Kermit...only they were called Miss Swineberg and Kerman. After they did their shtick, our WRJ President Rosanne Selfon and her VP came to visit us in cheerleader uniforms and led us in a WRJ cheer. After lunch, we had our workshops. I was unable to attend my workshop because it was overbooked, but I was promised the material via email. Peggy attended the workshop on "Torah: Another View" They demonstrated how to use the WRJ Torah study guides to lead stimulating Torah study sessions. Peggy really enjoyed the discussion on Lot, and we spent a good part of our evening before we went to sleep discussing it. During the next plenary session the Or Ami Awards were given out. They will be posted on the internet soon and I will let you know. Since WRJ has put daily newsletters from the conference on-line, I will just give you highlights and attach the newsletters. We then heard a talk by Executive Director, Shelley Lindauer. Details of her speech is in Friday's newsletter, which is attached. We also heard was the winner of the Jane Evans Pursuit of Justice Award, Jane Feld Carr who rescued over 3200 Syrian Jews. More about Ms. Carr can also be found in Friday's Newsletter. At the end of the evening, we were treated to a movie (with popcorn). The movie was called "The Longing" and was about a small group of South Americans who were eager to affirm their Jewish roots after centuries of living as Catholics. Friday morning began with the third plenary. Here we listened to the guest speaker, Anat Hoffman, executive director, Israel Religious Action Center. Ms. Hoffman is a major leader for social justice in Israel. She was born and raised in Jerusalem and served in the City Council for fourteen years, leading the opposition to the right wing and ultra-Orthodox administration. She is one of the founding members of Women of the Wall and continues to be a tireless advocate for freedom of religion and women's rights. My morning workshop was called "Programming Conversations." Four Sisterhood who won Or Ami Awards told us about their projects. Peggy's workshop was "Running a Successful Judaica Shop" where she learned about an exciting new way to add internet sales to our brick and motar store with a brand new program designed by Carmi Plaut. Then came a wonderful YES Fund luncheon. The luncheon is described in Saturday's newsletter, attached. We were proud to notice our own JoAnn Shank's name listed for completing another Silver Lifeline. Thanks JoAnn for making us proud. My afternoon workshop was on "Finding the Balance: Organizing Your Life." We will be receiving an overview of this workshop which I will send out to anyone who asks. Peggy went to "Torah Yoga," which integrates the study of tradational Jewish texts with Hatha yoga postures, meditative proyer, chanting, and the breath of life and NO, she will not be teaching a class. Friday evening, we joined with 3000 others for a Kabbalat Shabbat. It was unbelievable with singing and music. After services we gathered with our district and enjoyed a Shabbat dinner followed by a wonderful song session. The evening ended with "Solomon: King, Poet and Lover," a one man show. This play combined Shakespearean parody with comic irreverence. It was written by Marcus Freed and Dr. Rafael Zarum. Freed plays the king, 700 wives, court accountant, Sheba, and chief eunuch. It was a blast! Saturday's Shabbat service was amazing. Rabbi Yoffie's sermon was about three things my family talks about a lot...food, computers and Israel. If you want to know what she said...ask us privately. My last workshop, on Sunday, was on "Conflict Resolution." It's amazing how many Sisterhoods have issues with their clery, administrators, religious school leaders, etc (not us, of course!). What I got out of this workshop is that an important thing to remember is that we all want the same things...the continuation of Judaism, the education of our children, the well being of our synagogue community. Sometimes we just take different paths toward the same goals. Peggy went to ""Making Ritual Meaningful in OUr Worship and Daily Lives." Summing up, we had a wonderful time. We return home with new energy and ideas AND a new donor chair (thanks, Peggy). Anita
