Tikkun Olam Committee Shabbat

This Friday, April 17th, the Tikkun Olam Committee has arranged for a Josh Rosenberg from the Anti Deformation League to speak at Shabbat services. This will be a very informative talk of significant interest to all our members. The ADL is doing some great work and Josh will be telling us about their many services. Please plan on attending and supporting our committee efforts to provide important information to our congregation. Services start at 7:30 pm.

If you wish to follow through on your interests in Social Action and Social Justice, I strongly appeal to you to attend the next meeting of the Tikkun Olam Committee. We are well on our way to finalizing an environmental issue that will engage the congregation in an action that will better our community. This is an exciting project and one that will benefit from everyone's participation. You don't have to be a member of the committee to be involved. Social Action and Social Justice are not only major tenants of our religion, but are in the best interests of ourselves and our community. The next meeting is Tuesday, January 13th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the Cottage next to the Temple. Please let me know that you will be able to attend. Thank you, Rich Albert

Tikkun Olam Committee Meeting

The next Tikkun Olam Committee meeting will be Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at 7:00 pm. This month we will be meeting at the PACT office, since the Temple is closed for Sukkot. The PACT office is located in the Westminster Church at 1100 Shasta at the corner of The Alameda. Parking is behind the church and the PACT entrance is around the side away from the street. Please let me know you can attend, as we have some very important things to review and discuss, especially about our efforts to find an environmental actionable issue. Thanks to everyone who participated in our Tikkun Olam study session on Yom Kippur. I believe it was very productive and we will be able to move forward with our efforts.

The next TOC meeting will be Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at the Temple starting at 7:00 pm in the BFR. Please let me know you will attend as we will be discuss many important elements for our committee work for the remainder of the year. Chief among them will be discussion of further research on our Social Justice issue, planning for the study session during the HHD and our up coming Social Action projects. This is going to be an exciting and interesting season, so you won't want to miss out on anything.

The regular meeting of the Tikkun Olam Committee is Wednesday, July 23rd at the Temple. This month we will be meeting in the BFR. We will be having a special presentation about elder care as a part of our meeting. The meeting will start at 7:00 pm for those of you not involved in our issue research and at 5:45 pm for those of you who are or want to be more involved in our research activities.

There are several key dates upcoming that you should all be aware of so that you may consider participating. They involve PACT activities, and as you know, Temple Emanu-El is an active member of the PACT community, supporting and working for social change for social justice. There will be a townhall meeting on Thursday, June 19, 2008, of the Gang Prevention Task Force, the same group that met at Temple Emanu-El several months ago. They are moving forward with their efforts to improve safety in our community, and that is something we can all support. The meeting will be held at St. Maria Goretti Church in San Jose at 7 pm. The Tikkun Olam Committee is researching topics of interest to the congregation and is planning a meeting with officials of the San Jose City Office on Aging on Friday, June 20, 2008. The meeting will be held at the PACT office in San Jose starting at 12 noon. All are encouraged to attend. The next Tikkun Olam Committee meeting will be held in the Temple on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 7:00 pm. We are planning additional research speakers for this meeting, so mark your calendars now.

Please remember that the TOC will be meeting this month on Monday, June 16, 2008 at the Temple. Our meeting will begin at 6:00 pm for those interested in joining us for our research agenda discussion with the leaders from First Unitarian Church, who led the study of the Church's environmental issue. The regular meeting will begin at 7:00 pm and I encourage all to attend as we will be continuing our study of topics for our analysis of issues to engage the congregation in Social Justice. If you are concerned about dinner, please bring something to share at 6:00, even though Jen said she would provide a snack.

Tikkun Olam Committee Update

The committee met on Tuesday, May 27 for a very productive meeting. We have contacted and listened to well over a hundred of our congregants and have made an excellant start towards identifying an issue of Temple and community interest. For now, we have selected as our areas of focus the environment and elder care. We will now begin a process of research and development to see if we can't find an issue that will excite our members. If you have some suggestions, please let us know. Your feedback is very important, so please plan on attending our next meeting. Our next meeting will be on Monday, June 16, 2008 at the Temple at 7:00 pm, so please mark your calendars now. Also, please note that for this month we will meet on a Monday instead of our regular Tuesday schedule. We plan to have some short presentations oriented towards providing information about the issues we would like to work on this year. Let me know that you will attend. Rich

Rescheduled Tikkun Olam Committee Meeting

Due to a series of unexpected last minute situations, I had to reschedule the Tikkun Olam Committee meeting to Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at the Temple at 7:00 pm. Please let me know that you can attend, so I will know who is coming if there is a similar need to notify people. This is still an important meeting to discuss the results of our listening campaign and the direction for our next steps. I hope you all can make it, we need your feedback.
